Random News Briefs on 2010 Haiti Earthquake

By Lita C. Malicdem

Our PLANET EARTH is a restless, violent place. Since time immemorial we have been plagued by great natural disasters - earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods, megastorms - that strike without warning and leave havoc and destruction in their wake.

We know far more today about how our planet works than our ancestors did, and yet we are nearly as powerless as they are against the forces of nature. Although we have made great strides in recent decades in tracking world weather, monitoring seismic rumblings deep underground and otherwise keeping our fingers on the earth's pulse, predicting disasters is still an infant science. (Reader's Digest, GREAT DISASTERS, 1989 ed).

There's too much to note about the earthquake that recently devastated Haiti, to just ignore it so swiftly. The following news tidbits are "raw". I have collected here the hot news from the day the incident happened to the present. This way, I can accommodate and present a wider range of information. Tomorrow, every bit of this information will be in the archive to join the GREAT DISASTERS in history.

What is needed for this moment is support to encourage them to live despite their tragic experience. We are all brothers. Love crosses borders. Let us help and pray for our fallen brothers.

Micky Dee,

We are all stewards of this planet, but we know little about it. May our sharing of ideas hopefully gather more efforts to make it a safer place to live in. Thank you.

Thank you for this information; CNN sounds like a "Broke Record" here; you would think they would update their coverage of this disaster more often - once again thank you

Jyoti Khotari &

Coolmon,

Thank you for your comments. The Haitians are only a part of the suffering people worldwide, with or without earthquake. Haiti has long needed help from us. The earthquake, just led today's world attention to the country's already impoverished situation.Let's help and pray for that country.

habee,

Yes, of course! The president's pledge of $100 started it all.

Money, human resource, and facilities were poured in by the US at Haiti. Well, other countries did, too. Thanks for dropping by and for the comment.

Haiti's earthquake will cause major problems for years to come and fundraising will be ongoing. Australia has raised money for Haiti and sent aid as we are not unfamiliar to natural disasters, especially severe bush fires such as the ones that devastated rural Victoria in Feb 2009. Ironically this year we are fighting floods! Thanks Lita for another well researched hub.

MPG,

It's great to know there is international brotherhood and friendship among nations in times of calamities and disasters like what happened to Haiti and Victoria. My country, the Philippines, suffered much from typhoons and floods. We are recipients of aid from all over the world, too. Thanks for dropping by.

Great Hub. The rainy season is upon the Caribbean and Haiti is known to get affected by with with a lot of flooding. To date there are people still living in tents with no proper structure to weather the storms that are supposed to come. There is still a lot of work to be done in Haiti. Thank you for this hub so people will not forget.

Haiti's current situation is expected to be so. It will take them a lifetime and even beyond to be able to rise from the devastation. It pains me to think how the poorest of the poor there had survived the harsh realities of their day to day living. Other people must not be complacent about their plight. Love cross borders. I'll continue praying for people who have the means to help Haiti. Thank you!

Thanks, for this, Lita this is great. People tend to shake their heads at devastation and then go back to their dinner. I hate that. And nothing improves that way. Thanks for your hard work and research, and for keeping these people in mind. Great one!

ahostagesituation,

The uninvolved- those who didn't suffer the same fate, will shrug off their shoulders in unbelief, and sleep soundly as if nothing happened. We need to remind each other that unless we move a little beyond where we are, to offer what little we can do, the helpless and unfortunate will be mired deeper in their impoverished condition. Let's not forget the Haitians!
